Better Mental Health through Counselling!
FACE-TO-FACE COUNSELLING IN MANCHESTER
THE WORKS AND BENEFITS OF COUNSELLING
Here at SimplyTalk Counselling, a private counselling practice in Manchester, I offer face-to-face counselling sessions in confidence. The majority of people I have worked with came to me with a little knowledge of what counselling (therapy) is and how it can help. I would be often faced with question such as:
- HOW DOES IT WORK?
- HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
- WILL I BE FIXED BY THE END OF IT/HOW ARE YOU GOING TO FIX ME?
- WHAT CAN COUNSELLING HELP WITH?
Here is what you need to know about counselling to start with. This represents and underpins the way I will work with you to achieve your mental health goals and to live a more fulfilled life.
WHAT IS COUNSELLING?
Person-centred counselling is a talking therapy that evolved back in the 1950’s by the work of Carl Roger’s, an American psychologist. It works a non-directive approach to talking through your current experiences and difficulties, exploring the parts of you that you normally would not pause and look at for different reasons – fear, avoidance, guilt, unawareness, lack of confidence and many more. These are the undiscovered parts of you that stop you from moving forward and often make you feel helpless and hopeless.
Whatever the reason or your background, the power of talking and self-exploration has been proven to enhance people’s lives. It will benefit you in a way that lets you find your inner power and gain control over making informed decisions that work for you in the best way possible. This process is called self-actualisation. In other words, you will become the best version of yourself at any given time.
HOW DOES COUNSELLING WORK?
I always aim to be explicit about my work with the emphasis on the way I am with you in our sessions rather than doing anything to you including giving you advice, opinions or solutions. I will work with you to facilitate the exploration of anything you feel is concerning you, growing your own ability to make sense of your experiences in order to make informed decisions about your life in confidence. The sessions are always designed around your (the client) needs. I will guide you through the process and help you find solutions and coping mechanisms you can continue to use and build on after our therapeutic work together ends. I will remain non-judgemental, empathic and transparent throughout. Our counselling sessions are your own safe space. The one time of the week you can utilise purely for your needs.
These are the core principles that underpin the work we will do together and the therapeutic relationship we will build together in counselling sessions. This relationship is at the heart of the therapeutic process and largely determines the success of the healing process.
FORMS OF COUNSELLING AND SESSIONS
Counselling traditionally happens face-to-face, online (video call & email) or by telephone. Here at SimplyTalk Counselling I offer face-to-face counselling in Manchester City Center or online therapeutic interventions, be it Zoom video calls or via email.
Face-to-face counselling is where we, you (the client) and me (the counsellor), meet up on weekly basis at my practice premises and engage in therapy. The counselling rooms are located in the heart of Manchester and easily accessible by public transport or by foot. They have a cosy, relaxed and spacious feel to offer maximum comfort.
The Initial Consultation session is a great opportunity for us to meet online or over the phone for the very first time and a chance to establish whether we can work together. I will go through an assessment form with you in order to collect any information needed for counselling purposes. I will run through our service agreement and clarify any points if needed. It is vital that we use this session to get to know each other a little and to take care of the ‘business’ side of therapy before our first official counselling session.
Classic Counselling Session
This is your time with me to explore anything that is concerning you or weighing you down. You can share anything you feel needs your immediate attention. I can help you explore your feelings and thoughts around any issues and help you find your own ways to cope and manage better. You will gradually become more self-aware and confident in yourself to make informed decisions about your life and to execute them.
HOW MANY COUNSELLING SESSIONS DO I NEED?
There is no definite answer to this question since each of us as an individual is one of a kind. Every one of us needs a different amount of time to understand and process. It can take a number of sessions before you start seeing progress and feeling better in yourself. Counselling can be a short-term or a long-term intervention depending on your needs and other external factors such as time, accessibility or finances.
The decision about the length of therapy ultimately lies with you. We can make any arrangements accordingly. From personal experience, I would recommend that any short-term interventions take a minimum of 8-12 weeks. If you are experiencing more complex issues, the number of sessions needed may be significantly higher. I will ensure we review the therapeutic process regularly, so we can adjust the number of sessions to suit your personal circumstances.
Again, you have the autonomy to end your therapy at any point.
WILL I BE FIXED BY THE END OF MY COUNSELLING/HOW ARE YOU GOING TO FIX ME?
Please be aware that my work here is not to ‘fix’ you. You will only get out of your therapy sessions what you invest. Your commitment to change and growth is very important when you take on counselling sessions. You are responsible for doing the inner work. I will guide and support you along the way, ensuring the therapeutic process is safe and heading in the right direction.
Counselling enhances your life and your mental wellbeing. I will facilitate you to understand yourself better and be able to get in touch with your inner-self so that you are ready to make informed decisions about your life. The ultimate goal of counselling is you leaving the therapy being in control, more confident in yourself and more resilient to continue your journey by yourself, equipped with life-long tools you yourself have created.
You can revisit counselling at any point.
